UK reunions for Honey from Italy; and Buddy and Lucy from Greece

Before we set off on our next trip to southern Europe, we thought we’d share some happy UK reunion stories.

Honey travelled with Animalcouriers from Italy, where she lived with Julia, to her new home in Nottingham with Julia’s friends Pauline and Steve, and their dog Rollo. Pauline wrote to tell us how it’s going:

“Honey has settled in well with Rollo, who has accepted her with good grace (I think Honey might just be very slightly ‘top dog’). She and Rollo walk well together, and have met up with some of our other doggy friends! They haven’t fallen out and Honey loves the bone box, taking 6 bones to her bed yesterday. Rollo doesn’t bother with bones normally, but they are having a great game pinching bones from each other! We think she is a Staffie/Terrier cross, whereas Rollo is a Staffie/Lab cross — both being the same colour. Honey actually reminds me of Rollo when he was a pup!

We just wanted to thank you all at Animalcouriers for the great job you did in transporting her to England. I spoke to Julia in Italy yesterday and she is delighted Honey has settled in well and so soon — the best move for us all. I shall certainly recommend you to anyone who in the future might need your services, and will continue to watch your blogs with interest.”

Buddy travelled with us from Greece, where this stray pup had the good fortune to be adopted by Amy, who had gone to help with the refugee crisis on Lesvos. Making Buddy’s trip to the UK happen so swiftly was down to many people: Amy doing all her paperwork quickly and efficiently; the ‘can do’ attitude of Rebecca from Lesvos Stray Dog and Cat Adoptions and her vet; and Christine from Chris’s Animal Hotel in Athens, who boarded Buddy the night before his flight and helped courier J at the airport.

In what must be record time, by the time courier J boarded her easyJet flight to Athens, everything was perfectly in place for Buddy to travel. Amy wrote to say:

“Just wanted to say a huge thank you for everything you guys did to get Buddy back to me in amazing time! You have no idea how happy me and my son are!”

Lucy also travelled with us from Lesvos, on our most recent road trip from Greece. This lovely girl’s new home had fallen through, but thanks to our friend Jenny Fox, an animal behaviourist, who publicised Lucy’s story via her Facebook page, Lucy now has a lovely new home on Guernsey with Michelle, Tony and Sophie.

Courier J was due to accompany Lucy to Guernsey last weekend, but stormy seas meant the trip had to be postponed. Condor kindly transported Lucy’s travel box from Guernsey for free and looked after it until Lucy could travel. Yesterday was the big day. Courier J and Lucy travelled by Condor Seacat and were met by Michelle and her daughter Sophie, and Jayne, an old friend of Animalcouriers.

Four cute puppies from Cyprus need new homes

Amanda recently contacted us for help in finding forever homes for four abandoned puppies she rescued last year in Cyprus and has been looking after ever since. It’s estimated that these lovely ‘Heinz 57’ youngsters were born in early August, so they’re now about five months old. Help with the cost of transporting them to new homes is available.

Amanda tells us:

“On a hot Cyprus September afternoon, six hungry and thirsty puppies were found abandoned in a cardboard box by the side of a dusty track. Two puppies found happy new homes here in Cyprus to start their second-chance lives, but four are still looking for their forever families.

These two boys and two girls are completely unspoiled, enjoy meeting new people and dogs, are used to being tormented by our many household cats, and are happy to be alive! They are up to date on vaccinations, are microchipped and will be neutered in February.

All transportation costs to their new homes will be met. They can travel abroad from mid-April.”

If you can offer any of them a new home, please email: malanda472@aol.com

Ajax and Achilleus have made heroic recoveries

Black-and-white Ajax and white Achilleus are travelling with Animalcouriers from Greece to their new home in the UK. Both cats were very ill when Trisha and Andy found them. Andy has already adopted a number of cats from Greece who now have a lovely, safe life with him in the UK. Between them, Trisha and Andy have founded the charity Spartan Cats (see their facebook page) to help more Greek cats in need. They’re good friends with Nine Lives Greece whose great work we’re already very familiar with.

Here Andy tells us more about Ajax and Achilleus:

“In July, Trisha and I came across two very sick cats on the Greek island of Poros. The first was a very thin black-and-white cat who was wobbling about all over the place. He was in a very bad way and couldn’t breathe properly as he had cat flu. When I picked him up he was like a skeleton but was very friendly and seemed to want help. So we took him back to the room where I was staying (which later became a temporary cat hospital) and cleaned him up, fed him and cuddled him.

Later that night we went to find another sick cat that we had heard of and came across Achilleus, who was practically bald, sunburnt and didn’t seem to know where he was. We also took him back to stay at Trisha’s until we could take them to a vet.

Although the cats came from the street, they were very friendly and Ajax laid in bed, wrapped in my arms, purring all night. We called them Ajax and Achilleus as we thought that they needed strong names as they were so poorly. It took several weeks for them to get better and fortunately, in that time, they were offered a loving home in a cottage in the countryside in the UK.”

Our latest passengers have arrived safely in the UK

The Animalcouriers trip from Greece via Italy and Switzerland reached the UK this evening.

Marvellous Marvin has been reunited with Davina, and Daisy the cat will soon be back with Deborah.

Feline trio Blackie, Mo and Winnie are overnighting with courier M, from where they’ll be collected by Katherine for their onward journey to Portsmouth.

All nine dogs from Greece are staying at Treetops Kennels tonight, where they’re having a good meal and a well earned rest before being collected by their new owners.

And little Aris is staying the night with courier J before he starts the final leg of his journey to Ireland.

Heading north, the weather gets colder

Well, the wonderful warm and sunny weather we enjoyed in Italy didn’t last! The further north we’ve travelled, the greyer it’s become. Now we’re wrapped up warm and beset with cloud and rain.

We were lucky there was a lull in all the wet for the dogs to have their walk this morning. We did ask the cats if they fancied a ramble but they took one look and went back to sleep. Wouldn’t have minded doing the same ourselves!

An amazing home awaits Aris

Aris, the partially sighted kitty who’s on board our trip from Athens, is a rescue from Nine Lives Greece. He’s been adopted by Ann and will join her wonderful menagerie in Ireland.

Ann says:

“Aris has lost one eye and has partial sight in his remaining eye, he has had a few health issues but the amazing Nine Lives Greece and his foster Mum Sydney have brought him back from the brink. He is now on his way to his forever home here in Donegal, Ireland, where he can join our other three blind kittens we adopted from Nine Live last November.

Niko (formerly Angel), Zeus (formerly Ginger) and Fabio (formerly Stevie) arrived safe and well after a week on the road. We were so impressed with the service that Animalcouriers provided for our special furbabies. All three kitties settled really well in their forever home with our brood of special-needs critters. It’s been a joy to watch their individual personalities develop as they have grown confident and content in their environment.”

All the photos and captions are from Ann and in her own lovely words.

It sounds like Aris will fit in perfectly and will get all the care, attention, stimulation and company he needs to fulfil his potential.

To find out more about Ann’s brood, visit her Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/4Poshpaws – there are an astounding number of cats and dogs, nearly all with special needs. Seeing the photos of how they all interact is rather special.

Arrival in Bari — time for a good walk

It was raining as we left Greece and our crossing was somewhat stormy, but everyone on the Animalcouriers trip seemed to cope very well. After a delayed arrival at the Italian port of Bari, we found a suitable spot to walk the dogs.

Collecting our passengers in Greece, and crossing to Italy

Animalcouriers collected nine dogs and four cats in Athens earlier today for their journey to the UK.

As usual we received a warm welcome from our friends at the very wonderful Filozoikos Shelter and Nine Lives Greece. It’s always somewhat humbling to see how much effort goes into caring for all these animals who’ve had such tough times — and into finding them new homes where they can enjoy the rest of their lives.

Note the stylish collars all the Filozoikos dogs are sporting!

Everyone settled in quickly to the journey and we headed off towards the coast to catch the ferry to the Italian port of Bari.
