Pets fly to far-flung destinations: Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Caribbean, Cyprus, Australia, the US, Argentina, Canada and Abu Dhabi

Pets relocating around Europe tend to travel by road (and sea) with Animalcouriers; for those travelling further afield, we can arrange air freight and help with import and export paperwork.

Recent Asian destinations for some of our passengers include Singapore, Thailand  and Hong Kong. Handsome Labradoodle Thumper, his sidekick Vos, a Dachshund, and feline chums Bus and Biscuit flew to Singapore with BA. This family of four stayed at Haytor Kennels in Surrey while everything was prepared for their move. Vet on the Hill in Caterham took care of the export paperwork, and we worked with Mitchville, who organised the Singaporean import permits and delivered the pets to their new home once clearances had been completed at Changi Airport.

We arranged for slinky black cat Bruno to fly to Bangkok with Thai Air, then Boonma organised Bruno’s transfer to Phuket. With this trip, Bruno effectively returns to his homeland — he was found as a kitten in his owner’s Phuket garden, then moved to Hong Kong, after which he spent a few months in Brighton. Bruno has now put his suitcase into storage as the plans are for Phuket to be his permanent residence.

Rabbit Meow swapped Wales for Hong Kong. Meow turned out to be something of a conundrum. Despite the name, Meow is indeed a rabbit, not a cat. What’s more, while at the vet in Cardiff having the export paperwork completed, it was discovered that Meow wasn’t a buck, but a doe!

Our travellers to the Caribbean included Sage a very gentle, vocal Beagle puppy who joined her new family in Bermuda. Sage homeboarded with Animalcouriers while her export and import paperwork was prepared.

Sage's irresistible puppy dog eyes! Her owner Sharica emailed us, saying: "Just wanted to say thank you so much for everything in getting Sage to Bermuda. She is settling in very nicely."

We also arranged for Candy, a Giant Schnauzer puppy (and kennel mate of Max, who flew to Bahrain earlier this year), to fly to Grand Cayman to join her new family. They told us:

“The little bundle of fur arrived safely after her 13-hour journey to Grand Cayman. She is lovely and I am grateful to all of you who have made this happen. It certainly has been a journey but with your assistance and, dare I say it, your patience, we managed to pull off a transaction that connected Morecambe with sunny Grand Cayman! Now who would have thought that?”

Antipodean adventurers were Abby, a Munsterlander, who travelled to Wellington; Milly who headed to Perth; and Richard, a wire hair Fox Terrier who flew to Sydney to join breeder Christophe. Richard and Milly were among the last pets to stay at Eastern Creek Quarantine Kennels, which has now closed. From now on, cats and dogs travelling to Australia will stay at the new quarantine facility at Mickleham just north of Melbourne.

Conrad, who works tirelessly for the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens, linked up with Dianne of Tails from Greece Rescue and found homes for Ginger and her sister Lilly in Ontario, Canada. Lilly was still in Athens, while Conrad was caring for Ginger in the UK. Ginger flew from London to Amsterdam, where she boarded the same KLM flight to Toronto as Lilly, who flew in from Athens. In Toronto they were met by Dianne. Fittingly, these two sisters have new homes with two sisters!

Two Lolas headed east. In 2011 we helped Lola senior move from Abu Dhabi to the UK. When it was time to move back to Abu Dhabi, Lola’s family asked Animalcouriers and the UAE-based American Veterinary Clinic to take care of the paperwork and travel arrangements again.

Buddy and Milou head to the UK from Greece

Courier J is in Greece to accompany two rescue dogs, Buddy and Milou, who’re travelling to their families in the UK. They’re taking the plane from Athens to Paris Charles de Gaulle, and will travel the last leg of the journey by road.

Buddy hails from Lesvos, where he was adopted by Amy who’d gone to help with the refugee crisis. Amy tells us:

“I flew to Lesvos from the UK to volunteer with the Syrian refugee crisis there. The Greek islands like Lesvos in particular hold many tragic stories; the families travel there by boat across the Aegean Sea, many do not make it at all. This year alone 700 children have died crossing the Aegean, it is truly heartbreaking. My volunteering there has changed me forever…

On our second day we met Buddy while driving through from the port to one of the camps where we volunteered. He was one of many stray dogs — Lesvos has a huge stray problem. Every day we saw Buddy in the same spot, he was different to the other dogs. He craved attention, was very affectionate. Soon we started taking him on volunteer trips with us. I know that sometimes animals can be therapeutic, so we took Buddy one day to Pikpa camp for bereaved families who’ve lost children, parents, siblings, who tragically drowned getting to the island. It’s a very special but sad camp.

Well, this puppy played with the children there all day, putting smiles and laughter into their day. I knew then just how special he was, I felt like it was destiny to meet him. I have a little boy back home and I knew Buddy would light up his life. That’s when I decided to adopt him… and the rest is history!”

Courier J met up with our old friends Kiki and Martha from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens, who brought Milou to the airport to catch his flight. Snoopy, another Filozoikos dog, was also due to travel, but was diagnosed with leishmaniosis, a sandfly-borne blood disorder that’s common around the Mediterranean. Although it can be well controlled, it stays with a dog for life. His prospective family thought it over carefully but felt unable to take on a dog with a chronic illness.

We leave the UK with three cats; and start our trip back from Greece with 11 dogs, 11 cats, a Macaw and a Chinchilla on board

Couriers M and Mike recently set off on what will be our biggest-ever trip from Greece back to the UK. Luckily we have two vans, each with air conditioning, electrical airflow and comfy compartments for all the pets travelling with us.

A few pets travelled out with us from the UK. Gorgeous Gaia and Lulu, a pair of cats who are almost impossible to tell apart, are moving with Eric to Italy. We dropped them at a cattery in Verona for Eric to collect on his arrival.

Black-and white cat Gizmo is relocating to Skiathos, the island where ‘Mamma Mia’ was shot. Because owner Diana and family won’t get there until after we’ve dropped off Gizmo, we managed to find a very hospitable vet in Volos on the Greek mainland to look after Gizmo. As soon as Diana reaches Greece, she’ll hop onto the Seacat to fetch Gizmo. She told us she’d never had a night apart from Gizmo, so we can only imagine how much they are missing each other.

Courier J flew to Athens to join us for the journey back to the UK. The first passenger to get on board in Greece was Tardu, a 16-year-old blue-and-gold macaw. This colourful bird belonged to Chryssa’s dad, who sadly passed away recently. Unfortunately, Chryssa can’t take Tardu on herself, but has found a wonderful new home for her dad’s beloved companion with Nikos and Linda in Scotland. Animalcouriers already know Nikos and Linda, as we’ve transported a number of dogs they’ve adopted from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens. Such a small world!

We hear that Tardu, who is missing a wing, is more like a dog than a parrot, and likes to walk around on the floor. He settled into his travel compartment very quickly and started preening — a good sign that he is relaxed and happy. We’ve made him a playground with all his toys, his steps to climb up and down, and a cat carrier to perch on and watch all the comings and goings.

Tardu was driven to our hotel to meet us. We reckon he probably did a spot of back-seat driving!

Phil and Vivian have been living on the island of Samos for the past eight years, where they were volunteers for Greek Cat Rescue and also cared for a number of cats around their home. They’re now on their way back to the West Country, and are taking five cats with them — Bumper, Captain Flint, Jalfraizi, Oscar and Jacob.

Handsome ginger tabby Jalfraizi. He's been very unwell and everyone was concerned about him, but the good news is that he's fit to travel. He has a compartment to himself and antibiotics to keep him going.

When Kat from Birmingham went on holiday to Lesvos, she was adopted by a tortoiseshell cat called Petra. Kat decided to take Petra to the UK, so Rebecca of Lesvos Dog and Cat Adoptions helped out. Petra was initially fostered by one of the group’s volunteers, then Deb (owner of Scruff) offered to take Petra under her wing. Petra and Scruff were then looked after by Christine for about a week, as Deb had to return to the UK.

And Christine stepped in again, collecting him at Athens airport and putting him in Akis’s taxi with Scruff and Petra.

Tiffany, her husband and children have moved to the Manchester area, and now Lucky and Kitten are joining them. The children were devastated when they heard that the family couldn’t afford to fly the cats to England. But then they found our website and learned about the more affordable option of a road trip. So they got in touch and we agreed a price, and a very happy family is looking forward to welcoming their beloved pets to the UK.

Rex and Ringo, a pair of German Shepherd Dogs, are travelling with us to stay at a kennels in Calais for a little while. They’ll then hop on board when we pass by on our next trip to Portugal, towards the end of next month. The dogs were originally adopted from the Filozoikos Shelter, but when their owners moved to Portugal, they couldn’t afford to take the dogs immediately. So Filozoikos, being very responsible, stepped in and offered to look after the dogs until they could start their journey.

Fobius flies to Bahrain; Georgie and Leo hit France; Archie, Heidi, Betty and Rocky head north; and UK reunions for Carriça, Diesel and Lexi

Handsome hound Fobius from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens, Greece, has found a loving new home in Bahrain. Fobius spent a few months in the UK for his travel preparations to be completed, then homeboarded with Animalcouriers the night before his flight. Courier R got up early to drive him to the airport, and he’s now on his way to join his excited new owners.

Courier H drove Dachshunds Georgie and Leo, who hail from the Isle of Wight, to their French summer holiday destination in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, near Nice. They went completely bananas when they caught sight of owner Jay!

Meanwhile Courier D headed to the north of England with old and new faces on board. One of the newcomers is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Archie. This sweet and friendly chap is on his way from the Portsmouth area to Bewdley in Worcestershire.

The other new faces are seven-month-old Golden Retriever Heidi, and her cat chums Betty and Rocky, collected a few days ago in the Netherlands and now on their way to Lancashire. Heidi stayed briefly with courier M and his Golden Retriever Amber. She settled in really well and showed her playful side, exploring the garden and even persuading Amber to play, too.

The ‘old’ faces are Carriça and Diesel, two cats who crossed the Channel with us on our most recent trip from continental Europe. Both homeboarded with courier J and are now on their way to rejoin their owners.

Last but not least, Tom called in to our Surrey base to collect his beloved Lab Lexi. They’re now off to the Isle of Wight to join Lexi’s equally beloved brother Leo, who’s gone on ahead with friends.

Danai from Greece has a new home in the Netherlands; can you help Rita find a new home too?

Do you remember Danai? She was in the care of the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens Central Park since being left there as a puppy with her six litter mates. Danai had a serious eye condition — a dermoid cyst — that needed operating on. But at around €700, the cost was beyond the budget of the shelter. So Kiki, Martha and their colleagues set about raising funds.

Many people were moved by Danai’s story. Alexandros, a friend of the shelter, ran the Athens marathon to help raise money. Others — including followers of this blog — made donations. Everyone’s generosity meant enough money was soon raised and the operation could quickly go ahead. It was a complete success and Danai made a full recovery.

The latest great news about Danai is that she has a new home with Hans and Erica in the Netherlands. Conrad, part of the UK team that supports the shelter, says:

“Hans and Erica are the most special, caring and lovely people, and Danai has a wonderful and much loved life to look forward to. We thank so many different people who were deeply touched by Danai’s story, and helped out generously with her progress since she was first found abandoned and brought to the shelter, through her successful eye surgery and her foster home, to helping out her marathon running sponsors, and by spreading the word far and wide as to what an adorable dog she truly is.”

We recently heard from Cordelia who is looking for a home for Rita who is currently in the care of Nine Lives Greece. Cordelia describes her as follows.

Rita is a precious little soul, who has all four limbs and both eyes but, for whatever reason, has still not been adopted here. She is so gentle and easygoing and loving, just the easiest kitty.

If you can give Rita a forever home, please contact Nine Lives Greece directly.

Peabody meets John; Daisy meets Sarah; and Snoopy, Billie and Charlie are welcomed home

Mini Bull Terrier Peabody (aka Boy) travelled with Animalcouriers from Greece to the UK to take part in Crufts. When he met John for the first time, Peabody stood his ground. But once John spoke to him in Greek, there was a complete transformation. Wagging his tail, Peabody leapt with excitement and threw himself at John!

Meanwhile Daisy, who came from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens, arrived at her new home with Sarah, an old friend of the shelter. This lovely dog grew in confidence during the course of the trip and has quickly settled in to her UK home. Sarah sent some lovely photos and wrote to say:

“Thank you for bringing Daisy safely over. She will be just fine and is already wagging her tail!”

We also reunited Dalmatian Snoopy and his cat companions Billie and Charlie with their owners. These three amigos travelled with us from Toulouse in France and received a rapturous welcome at their Bristol home. The cats will remember it well, as they lived here before the family moved to France, but it’s all new for Snoopy. He’s such a self-assured chap, we’re sure he’ll soon put his Gallic charm to work and win over many hearts.

Meet Peabody, Fidel, Lady, Milou, Poppi, Philomena, Daisy, Robbie, Narla, Silva and Louis from Greece

Animalcouriers travelled from Italy to Greece and arrived to the unusual sight of snow in Patras. We drove on to Athens, where the first passenger to get on board was Champion Mini Bull Terrier Peabody. He’s off to England in time for Crufts, and we wish him lots of luck. John and Clare breed and show these lovely dogs.

Next up were Fidel and Lady, a lively pair of Spaniels who belong to Dimitri. He’s gone on ahead to England, leaving his dogs in the care of his parents, who brought them to us at the Palace Hotel.

Stavros brought us his cute dog Milou, as they and Anni are off to live and work in Scotland. Stavros’s sister Angeliki is already there — her dog Suzana travelled with us last October.

Cordelia and Anya came to our hotel with two gorgeous cats, Poppi and Philomena. Anya has been fostering them and was sad to see them go, but is pleased to think they have lovely new homes to go to. And finally, Marta and Kiki from the Filozoikos Shelter arrived with lovely black-and-white dog Daisy, who has a new home waiting for her in the UK.

From Athens we headed to Volos Port to meet Andrea and Tom, their dog Robbie and cat Narla. They’ve spent five wonderful years on Skiathos, but now the time has come to go back to the UK. Then it was off to Thessaloniki — an earlier accident on the motorway held us up, but we finally caught up with Ilias and his dog Silva, a cuddly brown and black terrier. There was just time for a quick hug before Ilias  had to dash off to catch his plane to Newcastle, where Afroditi is waiting for Ilias and Silva to join her.

The last passenger to board was Louis, a Boxer cross, who was lucky enough to be adopted by Tracy while she was living and working in Greece. Now on their way to the UK, Louis is travelling with us while Tracy takes the plane.

Update on Greek dog Danae since her eye surgery

Good news from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens — the first stage of Danae’s eye surgery went very well and she’s proving to be an excellent house guest at her foster home. And Cherry, the puppy who had surgery for a broken leg, is also making great strides.

Volunteer Alexandros ran the classic marathon in Athens to raise money for Danae’s operation. Martha from the shelter tells us:

“Alexandros’ effort was inspiring, Danae’s problem was touching, so by the time Alexandros was finishing the marathon, the amount needed for Danae’s surgery was gathered. Just after the marathon we informed those who made a donation for Danae’s surgery that the amount was gathered and that their donations will be used to pay the cost of Cherry’s surgery. Cherry is already recovering and she thanks you all.

Danae is recovering and relaxing in Ntora’s home who is temporarily fostering her. She is waiting (not very eagerly as we can imagine!!!) for the second part of her surgery next week. She would like to thank you all for your donations that made it possible for her to have the surgery immediately!”

Ntora reports that Danae “has good house manners, is affectionate, gets along with other dogs and cats, is calm in the car and on the leash. What more could anyone want?”

Once Danae is fully recovered from her surgery, she’ll be looking for her forever home. If you can help, please contact kyka@otenet.gr

Crossing the Channel from Calais to England

Animalcouriers reached the Calais area last night, ready for a morning crossing with P&O today. We’ve had walks and breakfast and have cleared all the paperwork checks, and we’re just getting on the ferry.

We’ve really enjoyed spending time with our travel companions. Some were a bit shy at times, but we’ve been able to talk to, handle and engage with every one of them. When the audience is so attentive, it does make telling travellers’ tales that much easier!

We were warned that Pearl and Ruby would be a pair of scaredycats, but like many youngsters who've travelled with us in the past, they soon got into the routine and started practising their high fives

Animalcouriers docks at the port of Ancona in Italy

The fast boat we were originally booked on to cross from Greece to Italy got held up at Barcelona in Spain, owing to bad weather. So we were pleased to be able to switch to another boat, but it was much slower, taking 22 hours to reach Ancona!

Checking in with all the pets was a painless process, with all our paperwork approved, which was very reassuring. And on board, the weather was pleasant, warm and sunny. As we promenaded up and down the decks with our canine passengers, onlookers must have thought we were a very eccentric pair of dog owners!
