UK reunions for Honey from Italy; and Buddy and Lucy from Greece

Before we set off on our next trip to southern Europe, we thought we’d share some happy UK reunion stories.

Honey travelled with Animalcouriers from Italy, where she lived with Julia, to her new home in Nottingham with Julia’s friends Pauline and Steve, and their dog Rollo. Pauline wrote to tell us how it’s going:

“Honey has settled in well with Rollo, who has accepted her with good grace (I think Honey might just be very slightly ‘top dog’). She and Rollo walk well together, and have met up with some of our other doggy friends! They haven’t fallen out and Honey loves the bone box, taking 6 bones to her bed yesterday. Rollo doesn’t bother with bones normally, but they are having a great game pinching bones from each other! We think she is a Staffie/Terrier cross, whereas Rollo is a Staffie/Lab cross — both being the same colour. Honey actually reminds me of Rollo when he was a pup!

We just wanted to thank you all at Animalcouriers for the great job you did in transporting her to England. I spoke to Julia in Italy yesterday and she is delighted Honey has settled in well and so soon — the best move for us all. I shall certainly recommend you to anyone who in the future might need your services, and will continue to watch your blogs with interest.”

Buddy travelled with us from Greece, where this stray pup had the good fortune to be adopted by Amy, who had gone to help with the refugee crisis on Lesvos. Making Buddy’s trip to the UK happen so swiftly was down to many people: Amy doing all her paperwork quickly and efficiently; the ‘can do’ attitude of Rebecca from Lesvos Stray Dog and Cat Adoptions and her vet; and Christine from Chris’s Animal Hotel in Athens, who boarded Buddy the night before his flight and helped courier J at the airport.

In what must be record time, by the time courier J boarded her easyJet flight to Athens, everything was perfectly in place for Buddy to travel. Amy wrote to say:

“Just wanted to say a huge thank you for everything you guys did to get Buddy back to me in amazing time! You have no idea how happy me and my son are!”

Lucy also travelled with us from Lesvos, on our most recent road trip from Greece. This lovely girl’s new home had fallen through, but thanks to our friend Jenny Fox, an animal behaviourist, who publicised Lucy’s story via her Facebook page, Lucy now has a lovely new home on Guernsey with Michelle, Tony and Sophie.

Courier J was due to accompany Lucy to Guernsey last weekend, but stormy seas meant the trip had to be postponed. Condor kindly transported Lucy’s travel box from Guernsey for free and looked after it until Lucy could travel. Yesterday was the big day. Courier J and Lucy travelled by Condor Seacat and were met by Michelle and her daughter Sophie, and Jayne, an old friend of Animalcouriers.

Pets fly to far-flung destinations: Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Caribbean, Cyprus, Australia, the US, Argentina, Canada and Abu Dhabi

Pets relocating around Europe tend to travel by road (and sea) with Animalcouriers; for those travelling further afield, we can arrange air freight and help with import and export paperwork.

Recent Asian destinations for some of our passengers include Singapore, Thailand  and Hong Kong. Handsome Labradoodle Thumper, his sidekick Vos, a Dachshund, and feline chums Bus and Biscuit flew to Singapore with BA. This family of four stayed at Haytor Kennels in Surrey while everything was prepared for their move. Vet on the Hill in Caterham took care of the export paperwork, and we worked with Mitchville, who organised the Singaporean import permits and delivered the pets to their new home once clearances had been completed at Changi Airport.

We arranged for slinky black cat Bruno to fly to Bangkok with Thai Air, then Boonma organised Bruno’s transfer to Phuket. With this trip, Bruno effectively returns to his homeland — he was found as a kitten in his owner’s Phuket garden, then moved to Hong Kong, after which he spent a few months in Brighton. Bruno has now put his suitcase into storage as the plans are for Phuket to be his permanent residence.

Rabbit Meow swapped Wales for Hong Kong. Meow turned out to be something of a conundrum. Despite the name, Meow is indeed a rabbit, not a cat. What’s more, while at the vet in Cardiff having the export paperwork completed, it was discovered that Meow wasn’t a buck, but a doe!

Our travellers to the Caribbean included Sage a very gentle, vocal Beagle puppy who joined her new family in Bermuda. Sage homeboarded with Animalcouriers while her export and import paperwork was prepared.

Sage's irresistible puppy dog eyes! Her owner Sharica emailed us, saying: "Just wanted to say thank you so much for everything in getting Sage to Bermuda. She is settling in very nicely."

We also arranged for Candy, a Giant Schnauzer puppy (and kennel mate of Max, who flew to Bahrain earlier this year), to fly to Grand Cayman to join her new family. They told us:

“The little bundle of fur arrived safely after her 13-hour journey to Grand Cayman. She is lovely and I am grateful to all of you who have made this happen. It certainly has been a journey but with your assistance and, dare I say it, your patience, we managed to pull off a transaction that connected Morecambe with sunny Grand Cayman! Now who would have thought that?”

A little closer to home, we arranged for two dogs, Mit and Dylan, to fly to North Cyprus.

Antipodean adventurers were Abby, a Munsterlander, who travelled to Wellington; Milly who headed to Perth; and Richard, a wire hair Fox Terrier who flew to Sydney to join breeder Christophe. Richard and Milly were among the last pets to stay at Eastern Creek Quarantine Kennels, which has now closed. From now on, cats and dogs travelling to Australia will stay at the new quarantine facility at Mickleham just north of Melbourne.

Heading west were Willow, a very sweet King Charles Cavalier puppy who went to Boston; Nellie who flew to Newark with United; firm friends Tin and Sabina who headed to Buenos Aires; and Ginger who took off to Toronto.

Conrad, who works tirelessly for the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens, linked up with Dianne of Tails from Greece Rescue and found homes for Ginger and her sister Lilly in Ontario, Canada. Lilly was still in Athens, while Conrad was caring for Ginger in the UK. Ginger flew from London to Amsterdam, where she boarded the same KLM flight to Toronto as Lilly, who flew in from Athens. In Toronto they were met by Dianne. Fittingly, these two sisters have new homes with two sisters!

Two Lolas headed east. In 2011 we helped Lola senior move from Abu Dhabi to the UK. When it was time to move back to Abu Dhabi, Lola’s family asked Animalcouriers and the UAE-based American Veterinary Clinic to take care of the paperwork and travel arrangements again.

Safely back from Lesvos, and meeting more UK-bound passengers in Athens

Courier J and her seven charges from Lesvos arrived safely in Piraeus Port where they were met by Akis, who runs a pet taxi service. Akis has become a firm friend of ours, and happily obliges all our requests, however outlandish they may seem! True to form, he was a complete hero and disembarked all the dogs into his taxi. He had already met up with Aphrodite and her Rottweiler, Maya, who’d arrived at the port on the morning ferry from Crete.

Because of a general strike in Greece, there were no ferries for 24 hours. So the eight dogs went to stay with Christine for a couple of nights. She has kennels on the outskirts of Athens, Chris’s Animal Hotel, and has helped us out before.

Courier M arrived from Italy, having also been delayed by the strike, and drove over from Patras port to meet up with the rest of our passengers who are winging their way from various islands and other parts of the Greece. Because of the delay, we decided that courier Mike should turn back and start collecting our Italian passengers.

Martina’s Jack Russell Terrier, Jack, arrived from Poros on the high-speed hydrofoil, where he was met by Akis and whisked over to us. A lot of rapid activity for a little chap, but he’s been very stoical about it all!

Another Martina, from PetSociety  kennels, brought us lovely Lab Sugar, who’s been staying at the kennels for a little while. Owner Anastasia went on ahead to London and is very excited that Sugar can now join her.

It wouldn’t be a proper Greek trip if we didn’t meet up with Cordelia. She’s been looking after Tony’s cat, Arizona, until we could transport her to the UK. Cordelia and her husband brought Arizona to us at the port.

Sophia has moved to Nottingham and now her cat Gismo is joining her. Sophia’s parents Toula and Zisis, along with their French Bulldog, Zoe, brought Gismo to join the trip. Toula wondered if we needed any help on the journey — she was keen to hop on board and travel with us so she could visit Sophia!

Maria has relocated to Scotland for work reasons, and left her dogs Diego and Souki in the temporary care of her cousin Anastasia. Now it’s time for this sweet brother and sister to rejoin Maria.

Sonia, Ellena and Sophia from local cat welfare charity Nine Lives Greece brought us Carol’s cats Carrie and Olive. The charity, which does brilliant work with stray cats in Athens, is holding a fund-raising bazaar today. They hope to raise around €2,000, but admit that will probably only meet one vet bill.

John and Jacqui are returning to the UK from Athens. Their cat Lilly is naturally going to join them at their home in London.

We met Niko under the massive Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge near Patras. He’s such a cool hound, he has his own Facebook page! Niko came to Anne as a stray puppy about two years ago. Anne has a stables on the hillside overlooking the bridge, where she gives riding lessons to people with and without disabilities, and organises hacking and other activities. Plenty of stray and rescued dogs and cats find a home here. Recently, Elizabeth from Livingstone met Niko and completely fell in love with him. Anne very wisely allowed Elizabeth to adopt Niko, knowing he’s going to a super home, and that she’ll have room for another local stray.

Akis took control of disembarking the seven dogs from Lesvos. Here he is collecting the puppies, telling them to be good for him.

Setting off for Greece, and delivering Rosalina and Nox in Italy on the way

Animalcouriers has set off on what may be the most complex trip we’ve ever undertaken from a logistical point of view. This is just the start…

Couriers M and Mike left the UK on Sunday with Rosalina and Nox on board, bound for Italy. These two very beautiful and regal cats belong to Francesca. After working in London for a few years, she’s returned to her native Italy, and we had the pleasure of transporting her beloved pets.

While couriers M and Mike wend their way by road towards the Greek capital, Athens, courier J flew to the same destination. Her hold luggage consisted of a big box containing seven slip leads, lots of newspaper, plenty of dog biscuits, and several bicycle chains and padlocks. Not some weird and wonderful bondage equipment, but everything she needed to escort seven dogs from Lesvos back to the mainland by boat!

Last night courier J met up with lovely Christos from Hellas Ferries, an Athenian travel agent. He regards Animalcouriers as personal friends, and the warmth and passion he shows us are what make Greek people very special to us. Christos organised courier J onto a Hellenic Seaways boat at Piraeus port for the crossing to Lesvos and back. They enjoyed a drink on the boat, swapping life stories, before it was time to set off.

Today courier J met Rebecca from Lesvos Stray Dogs and Cat Adoptions. In between looking after stray dogs and cats, Rebecca’s been on the beaches helping migrants from the water as their little boats reach the shore — just one element of a massive humanitarian aid operation that’s underway.

Rebecca handed over the seven dogs who are travelling to homes and owners the UK:

  • Bella, Zeus, Hercules and Bear are four puppies whose journey to Cambridgeshire has been sponsored by Wendy — all four have homes with friends and a vet
  • Another puppy, Berti, for Wild at Heart
  • Ian’s dog, Dexter, a holiday romance — Rebecca arranged a foster home for Dexter while he waited for us, as he just missed our last trip. We know Ian is very excited about Dexter’s imminent arrival, after quite some time apart.
  • Lucy, the dog we blogged about earlier in the week, who’ll be fostered by Wendy on arrival before moving to her forever home
Mike, a member of the ferry crew, kindly lending a hand at the onboard kennels. All the crew were really helpful, and let courier J prepare the cages on the outbound trip so they would be ready to house the dogs on the way back to Piraeus.

Hearty, Lola and Russo join us in Spain; Kaly, Moggy and TomTom get on board in France; and UK reunions start with Pixtura and Nina

Lovely young tortoiseshell cats Hearty and Lola hail from the Balearic Islands. They were brought by ferry to Denia and collected by our friends from Casa Antigua kennels and cattery in Jesus Pobre. Now they’re on board with Animalcouriers, on their way to the UK. They’re a playful pair, amusing themselves by leaping around their compartment and being general hooligans!

Our final stop in Spain was to collect gorgeous Maine Coon cat Russo from Cynthia. Russo regularly commutes between Hertfordshire and the beautiful seaside town of Tamariu, near Girona. He usually travels with Cynthia and Larry by car but, as Larry is unwell, Animalcouriers has the honour of chauffeuring Russo this time.

Once across the border into France, our final passengers joined us in Sigoules, a beautiful rural spot in the Bergerac area. Labrador Kaly enjoys walking, eating and chatting, while her feline companions Moggy and TomTom are making the most of their elevated position in our van. It lets them keep an eye on everything while maintaining a certain catlike aloofness.

Reunions for Princessa, Bella, Foxydog, Poppy, Rex and Ringo; and Pixtura, Tavi, Mitzi, Polly and Maru are first to join our UK-bound trip

Animalcouriers reunited pets with their owners in Spain and Portugal. We then started the trip back north with the first of our UK-bound passengers on board.

Having reunited lovely little Princessa with her owner’s partner, Antonio, we spent the night at the coastal resort of Mojacar. During our evening dog walks along the seafront, we watched the waves pounding onto the sand as a storm brewed up. By morning the storm had blown itself out, and dogs and couriers alike enjoyed watching the sun rise on a fresh new day.

When Bella’s owner Jean and her husband moved to Spain, they took the ferry with their two dogs, but felt that Bella would be more comfortable travelling with us. Most Orientals are very vocal and we had expected to be serenaded on the trip, but Bella was quiet as a mouse — until she saw Jean! We’re sure Bella will enjoy exploring the hillside location of her new Spanish home.

Our next delivery was Poppy the pocket-sized Staffie, who reached her new home in Portugal. Despite the cold, wet weather she was very pleased to be reunited with her owner.

German Shepherd Dogs Rex and Ringo were adopted as puppies from the Filozoikos Shelter by Pedro, when he was working in Athens‎. Urgent family circumstances meant Pedro had to return to Portugal, and we were asked to transport his dogs. We don’t have a direct route, but worked out a two-stage trip from them. We collected them from Filozoikos on our Greek run‎ last month and took them to kennels in France, where we collected them as we passed by this time. As you may imagine, they’ve become quite the seasoned travellers!

Tiny Pixtura, a Chihuahua–Miniature Pinscher cross, joined our trip in Lisbon, sporting a smart pink coat. She’s travelling with us to rejoin her owner Sonia in Cambridgeshire‎.

While in the Lisbon area we also collected four cats, Tavi, Mitzi, Polly and Maru, who are heading to the leafy lanes of Somerset. Owners Gillian and Richard are most definitely cat people and these four are the apples of everyone’s eye — although they did play hard to get when we turned up to collect them!

Two bespoke trips: Bublik from Juan les Pins; and a family of six from Devon

In addition to our regular, shared road trips throughout Europe, Animalcouriers is also sometimes asked to do a bespoke trip, where we transport a pet (or group of pets) belonging to one family.

Last week we collected tiny Bublik from storm-struck Juan les Pins in south-east France, to take him to his winter residence in London, where his owner is waiting for him. Completely oblivious to the weather conditions, Bublik set off on his travels very calmly. So calmly, in fact, he was sound asleep and snoring before we’d even left the driveway!

Today it was the turn of a fabulous furry family of six to start their journey from Devon to La Cala de Mijas in Spain. Dogs Sasha, Lola, Cara and Liz, and their feline chums Priva and Fifi, were ready and waiting with shiny new passports when we arrived. Everything was beautifully organised, including bags of favourite food, toys, treats and blankets. They’ll reach France in the morning, and will travel on down to Malaga, where they’ll enjoy a spot of relaxation time in kennels while their human family catches up with them.

We leave the UK with three cats; and start our trip back from Greece with 11 dogs, 11 cats, a Macaw and a Chinchilla on board

Couriers M and Mike recently set off on what will be our biggest-ever trip from Greece back to the UK. Luckily we have two vans, each with air conditioning, electrical airflow and comfy compartments for all the pets travelling with us.

A few pets travelled out with us from the UK. Gorgeous Gaia and Lulu, a pair of cats who are almost impossible to tell apart, are moving with Eric to Italy. We dropped them at a cattery in Verona for Eric to collect on his arrival.

Black-and white cat Gizmo is relocating to Skiathos, the island where ‘Mamma Mia’ was shot. Because owner Diana and family won’t get there until after we’ve dropped off Gizmo, we managed to find a very hospitable vet in Volos on the Greek mainland to look after Gizmo. As soon as Diana reaches Greece, she’ll hop onto the Seacat to fetch Gizmo. She told us she’d never had a night apart from Gizmo, so we can only imagine how much they are missing each other.

Courier J flew to Athens to join us for the journey back to the UK. The first passenger to get on board in Greece was Tardu, a 16-year-old blue-and-gold macaw. This colourful bird belonged to Chryssa’s dad, who sadly passed away recently. Unfortunately, Chryssa can’t take Tardu on herself, but has found a wonderful new home for her dad’s beloved companion with Nikos and Linda in Scotland. Animalcouriers already know Nikos and Linda, as we’ve transported a number of dogs they’ve adopted from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens. Such a small world!

We hear that Tardu, who is missing a wing, is more like a dog than a parrot, and likes to walk around on the floor. He settled into his travel compartment very quickly and started preening — a good sign that he is relaxed and happy. We’ve made him a playground with all his toys, his steps to climb up and down, and a cat carrier to perch on and watch all the comings and goings.

Tardu was driven to our hotel to meet us. We reckon he probably did a spot of back-seat driving!

Phil and Vivian have been living on the island of Samos for the past eight years, where they were volunteers for Greek Cat Rescue and also cared for a number of cats around their home. They’re now on their way back to the West Country, and are taking five cats with them — Bumper, Captain Flint, Jalfraizi, Oscar and Jacob.

Handsome ginger tabby Jalfraizi. He's been very unwell and everyone was concerned about him, but the good news is that he's fit to travel. He has a compartment to himself and antibiotics to keep him going.

Phil and Vivian and their cats arrived with Akis in his pet taxi — a great service for people and their pets. We saw Akis again the next day with Petra, Scruff and Alfie.

When Kat from Birmingham went on holiday to Lesvos, she was adopted by a tortoiseshell cat called Petra. Kat decided to take Petra to the UK, so Rebecca of Lesvos Dog and Cat Adoptions helped out. Petra was initially fostered by one of the group’s volunteers, then Deb (owner of Scruff) offered to take Petra under her wing. Petra and Scruff were then looked after by Christine for about a week, as Deb had to return to the UK.

Alfie belongs to Tom and Laura, who adopted him while on holiday in Lesvos. Once again, Rebecca of Lesvos Dog and Cat Adoptions helped out, collecting Alfie from his foster mum, sorting his passport, arranging a travel box and popping him onto a late-night flight. And Christine stepped in again, collecting him at Athens airport and putting him in Akis’s taxi with Scruff and Petra.

Tiffany, her husband and children have moved to the Manchester area, and now Lucky and Kitten are joining them. The children were devastated when they heard that the family couldn’t afford to fly the cats to England. But then they found our website and learned about the more affordable option of a road trip. So they got in touch and we agreed a price, and a very happy family is looking forward to welcoming their beloved pets to the UK.

When Lesley left Crete we transported two of her dogs for her to Northumberland. Now it’s time for the other two to follow on. At Piraeus Port we met Joe with Tasha and Corby, a very friendly pair of dogs.

Labrador Aris arrived with an enormous grin on his face and a very waggy tail, willing to be friends with everyone. Ioannis (John) and his family have already relocated to the UK and are really missing Aris. Not long now til everyone’s back together.

Rex and Ringo, a pair of German Shepherd Dogs, are travelling with us to stay at a kennels in Calais for a little while. They’ll then hop on board when we pass by on our next trip to Portugal, towards the end of next month. The dogs were originally adopted from the Filozoikos Shelter, but when their owners moved to Portugal, they couldn’t afford to take the dogs immediately. So Filozoikos, being very responsible, stepped in and offered to look after the dogs until they could start their journey.

Lovely little Zouzou arrived looking a bit worried, so we spent a bit of time chatting and making a fuss of her, which helped to calm her down. Her owner Maria has already relocated to England and Zouzou, who’s been in the care of a relative, is the last member of the family to travel.

English Setter Boo belongs to George and Flora, who’ve relocated to Edinburgh from Athens. Now Boo, who has been staying with George’s parents in Athens, is off to join them. Boo is completely deaf, but apparently understands everything you say to her. Flora and George say they miss her very much, so it will be happy time when they are reunited.

Cordelia, an old friend of ours, brought us three cats whose owners have moved back from Athens to Ireland. Little Paw and Michael belong to Paula; and Dexter is owned by Linda. We’re expecting some Irish folk singing (or perhaps dancing) from this trio en route!

We met Angeliki and her son with Max the dog at Igoumenitsa. They had travelled from Corfu on the local ferry to catch us just as we were leaving Greece.

Chinchilla Ollie is one of our smallest and most frequent travellers — this is his third trip with us. Owner Napoleana has now had a baby so their family gets bigger. Nela the dog is flying with the family via Paris Charles De Gaulle, but that isn’t an option for Ollie, so he’s on the road with Animalcouriers.

Fobius flies to Bahrain; Georgie and Leo hit France; Archie, Heidi, Betty and Rocky head north; and UK reunions for Carriça, Diesel and Lexi

Handsome hound Fobius from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens, Greece, has found a loving new home in Bahrain. Fobius spent a few months in the UK for his travel preparations to be completed, then homeboarded with Animalcouriers the night before his flight. Courier R got up early to drive him to the airport, and he’s now on his way to join his excited new owners.

Courier H drove Dachshunds Georgie and Leo, who hail from the Isle of Wight, to their French summer holiday destination in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, near Nice. They went completely bananas when they caught sight of owner Jay!

Meanwhile Courier D headed to the north of England with old and new faces on board. One of the newcomers is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Archie. This sweet and friendly chap is on his way from the Portsmouth area to Bewdley in Worcestershire.

The other new faces are seven-month-old Golden Retriever Heidi, and her cat chums Betty and Rocky, collected a few days ago in the Netherlands and now on their way to Lancashire. Heidi stayed briefly with courier M and his Golden Retriever Amber. She settled in really well and showed her playful side, exploring the garden and even persuading Amber to play, too.

The ‘old’ faces are Carriça and Diesel, two cats who crossed the Channel with us on our most recent trip from continental Europe. Both homeboarded with courier J and are now on their way to rejoin their owners.

Last but not least, Tom called in to our Surrey base to collect his beloved Lab Lexi. They’re now off to the Isle of Wight to join Lexi’s equally beloved brother Leo, who’s gone on ahead with friends.

Arriving in Greece with Beau and Bumble; and meeting some of the locals

Animalcouriers reached the Greek port of Igoumenitsa by ferry from Italy and motored straight on down to Athens to reunite Beau and Bumble with their owners.

Meanwhile, courier J flew in to Athens to take over from courier Mike for the remainder of the trip. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at a taverna overlooking the water before waving him off.

Not long now before we meet the first of the cats and dogs who’re joining us for the trip back to the UK.

We got a shady, airy spot on the ferry for our van, which meant the dogs could comfortably stay in their travel compartments, rather than moving to the on-board kennels.
