The story of Honey, which demonstrates why microchipping your pets is always worth it

Beautiful cat Honey disappeared from Pueblo Nuevo in Sotogrande over three years ago. Her family searched and searched for her, placed ads in the paper and put up posters in an effort to find her, but to no avail. Distraught, they had to leave for England without her.

Imagine the family’s surprise when they recently got a call from their old vet in Sotogrande, Paola, to say that Honey had been found! She’d been discovered living by herself in Cordoba — around 300km from her original home! Luckily she had been microchipped, so a vet in Cordoba could identify her and trace Paola.

Honey was sent back to Sotogrande where she’s been staying at Paola’s clinic. Paola organised Honey’s pet passport and has been taking care of her during the 21-day waiting period for the passport to become valid. We collected her this afternoon to start her journey to the UK.

As you can imagine, Howard and Samantha are delighted at the prospect of welcoming Honey back into the family in just a few days’ time.

  1. What a truly moving and touching story…is these types of stories that makes us stop and acknowledge that there are indeed good people in this world

  2. Indeed it is vital..and a good idea to get the vet to scan for the chip when having a yearly visit,we did this just before we moved house (3 hours away) and just as well as Marbles chip was not detectable ..they can move!! timely to find out in case something had gone wrong in the move as her chip would not have been picked up! Hugs Fozziemum and so glad for the happy ending 🙂 xx

    • You are so righ Fozziemum, we’ve picked up cats only to have them turned back at the border as no microchip could be found. We now carry two different makes of scanner too as some chips are invisible to one kind.

  3. Ohhh that’s so nice.
Doggy has his chip since he was little, now I can’t just let him lose when he eat my shoes, people would bring him back to me lol.
Honey look like an Ewok, huge cat!

  4. Very nice story. :’) All my dogs’n’cats have chips, but it’s true they can move and I never thought about that. Next time at the vet I’ll ask him to check if the chips are still detectable.

  5. “Living by herself…” Only a cat could pull that off. Wonderful story. Since I am always wandering off in the woods, my wife Peggy has been threatening to put a microchip in me. 🙂 –Curt

  6. Our Spanish tomcat Lucky-Loulou has 2 chips: 1 Spanish and 1 French! Why? Because he has an electronic catdoor “made in England” that could “read” most of the European chips, but not the Spanish one! 🙂 Meet Lucky, please – if you have some spare time: 🙂

    • Hi Melanie – we’ve popped over to see Lucky Two-chips and he’s just gorgeous! We know the cat flaps you’re talking about but didn’t realise they were monolingual. Hope they’ve improved things since you got yours.

  7. Sissy wasn’t entirely pleased with that big needle, but I felt much reassured when we took our first trip going cross-country. Hmmm… never occurred to me about the thing moving. Hopefully we only need one language here?
