Electra, who is travelling with us from Athens to the UK, has been adopted by Stathis and his family, who are very excited about her imminent arrival. Stathis tells us:
“We have been looking for a dog for the past two years. We didn’t want a designer puppy, we’d rather give a stray dog a second chance, and always liked mongrels: they are mellow, loyal and more often than not, full of surprises. So one day the internet search led us to the ‘friends of the strays of Greece’ website — and when we looked at the dogs featured, we really liked them! Add to this the fact that I am of Greek origin, so I figured that we could give one of them a ‘home from home’ and I could talk to them in their mother tongue so to speak!
So we got in touch, and after a home check we were ready for the next phase.
In February, we and our boys went to Greece for a short break. We had been given the address and phone number of Filozoikos — so we could go and have a look at the dogs we had shortlisted. The rest, as they say, was history — Kiki showed us around, we saw Electra and I think the whole family felt that we had found what we were looking for.
We took her for a stroll and she was such a calm, sweet girl. I still don’t know if we picked her or she picked us; we left the shelter saying to Kiki that we would have a think about it, but I reckon we all knew that she was the one.
So here we are, six weeks later, and Electra is now on her journey to the UK. We are all very excited, can’t wait until Monday!
As an interesting aside — we noticed that one of the other dogs from Filozoikos, Elpida (also travelling to the UK with Animalcouriers), has been adopted by a family who lives less than a mile away from us, the other side of the valley. What a coincidence! Maybe Electra and Elpida will be meeting each other on the common in the evenings, reminiscing about the old country and having a good old moan about the British weather and the rain!”

WHat a lovely story
Isn’t it lovely. We particularly like the last para where the amazing coincidence is described
What a joyful post to read on a Friday that has seen so many dash to the bridge in the cat blogosphere. Thank you Miss Annie
Oh Savvy, glad we can bring some cheer on such a sad day.
I recently got back from a 5 week trip to India, where stray dogs are commonplace – crossing the street or taking a nap in the shade of a statue. There seems to be a definite ‘type’ – none are long-haired, and all are about the same size. Some are quite handsome, if battle-scarred.
Yes, we’ve heard other bloggers talk about these Indian strays – the photos we have seen are rather marvellous. Handsome and battle scarred, as you say.
Thanks for sharing this touching post with me. I can imagine Electra and Elpida together including tea and shortbread fingers

Oh Easy, you’ve really planted a picture in our heads – how utterly charming it is
…or even a little ouzo with some feta cheese, home made meatballs, fresh tomatoes… yum yum…
Oh Stathis, now you’re talking!
What a beautiful story.
Quite special.
What a beautiful dog and so nice to have an old friend in the neighborhood! The perfect ending.
They’ll have so much to tell each other when they meet!
Wonderful story. Electra is a lovely dog, I’m sure you’ll all be very very happy together
And being able to talk to each other in their native language will be lovely too
What a great story. I hope those two do get to spend time reminiscing and enjoying the nows.
We do hope so too – we’ve asked them to let us know
